Baku in Race to Host World Expo 2025

“Azerbaijan, currently bidding to host World Expo 2025, is celebrating great success in hosting its third consecutive Grand Prix. Formula 1’s annual appearance in Baku saw Lewis Hamilton win on the thrilling city circuit, a fan and driver favourite.

Packed grandstands – including a 31% annual increase in international race spectators - watched Hamilton steal the limelight from his team mate, Valtteri Bottas, who suffered a late-race puncture. But the star of the show was Baku itself. Spectacularly located on the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan’s capital is a mix of ancient wonders as well as modern architectural and engineering marvels.

The first F1 race in Baku was in 2016, The European Grand Prix, now known as the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. With this spectacular event firmly established in the sporting calendar, bringing World Expo 2025 to Baku would be a natural next step. As a host of successful international events such as the European Games, Islamic Solidarity Games, the Chess Olympiad, the Chess World Cup and, of course, F1, Baku has been developing the skills that will make it a great World Expo city.

Baku has more major events on the horizon: The European Youth Olympic Festival, The UEFA Europa League Final and in 2020 The European Football Championships.”
