Baku confirmed as a World Expo 2025 Finalist

Monday May 15, Baku, Azerbaijan - The Bureau International Des Expositions (BIE) has now released the minutes of the BIE Executive Committee meeting held on May 4 that contained the report of the BIE Enquiry Mission to Baku, a candidate city to host World Expo 2025.

The World Expo 2025 Baku Bid Committee is proud to announce it has been confirmed as a finalist and will now progress to the last stage of the bid process, leading to the BIE’s 164th General Assembly in Paris in November when the members will elect the city to host the World Expo in 2025.

  • The official Report of the Enquiry Mission on the proposal for a registered exhibition in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2025 found that “hosting the Expo continues to build on Azerbaijan’s experience of hosting major international events and would be a natural and logical progression to enhancing its status as a host for international landmark events.”
  • The Mission recognised “a strong national consensus around the project to host the Expo, that is in line with the stated development strategy”.
  • The Mission admired the importance of the theme - Developing Human Capital, Building A Better Future - and notes this it is “timely and potentially attractive to a large number of countries” and that “it takes into account current human economic and social transformations and challenges.” Additionally, Azerbaijan’s specific legitimacy to propose the theme was recognised as “the Mission considers that the theme is also highly relevant to the locality of the exhibition and offers strong potential to attract participation.”

Samir Sharifov, Minister of Finance for the Republic of Azerbaijan & Chair of the Bid Committee, said:

“We thank the BIE Executive Committee and the Enquiry Mission for their detailed and positive report on our proposal. We look forward to having the opportunity to present our plans to the BIE members during the 163rd General Assembly held in Paris next month.”
