Expo Faces: Dr Maryam Gafar-zada, Theme Leader for Vitality

‘Expo Faces’ is a series of stories looking at the faces and voices of people across Azerbaijan who support Baku’s bid to host World Expo 2025. Today we hear from Dr Maryam Gafar-zada, who is the official Expo 2025 Baku Theme Leader for ‘Vitality – the Future of Health’.

Good health is key for human capital development, and it is important to me as Theme Leader for ‘Vitality – the Future of Health’ that we explore how we can secure the well-being of the world’s populations and the sustainability of their environments so that everyone can reach their full potential.

I am currently working for the Ministry of Youth and Sport of the Republic of Azerbaijan while also being a professor at the Azerbaijan State Academy of Physical Culture and Sport. Before this, I was a Program Manager at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, where I focused on the implementation of a number of projects in the areas of sport, health and bioethics and social cohesion. My experience has shown me how important it is for international institutions, national governments and people to closely co-operate in order to improve lives.

Since 1991 Azerbaijan has built more than 600 hospitals and invested in the health of its people. ‘Vitality – the Future of Health’ is an important focus not just for Azerbaijan but for the world to come together and discuss universal access to healthcare, good nutrition and green, sustainable environments.

I would look forward to continuing this important discussion at World Expo 2025 Baku.
