National Assembly of Youth Organizations Elects First Woman Chairperson

24-year old Maryam Majidov has been elected as Chair of the National Assembly of Youth Organizations of the Republic of Azerbaijan (NAYORA), the first woman to hold the position. NAYORA holds advisory status with the UN Economic and Social Council and is a full member of the European Youth Forum.

Maryam had been involved with NAYORA since she was 15 years old and has represented her country around the world. A native of Baku, Maryam is also a member of the youth group supporting Baku’s Bid to host World Expo. This group is integral to promoting key messages through social media and encouraging the youth of Azerbaijan to spread the theme of the Bid, ‘Developing Human Capital, Building a Better Future.’

“It’s a great honour to become the first woman chairperson of NAYORA,” says Maryam. “The organisation coordinates activities for its 112 youth organization members, increasing the role of young people in society. In this respect it has much in common with World Expo 2025 Baku Azerbaijan. Over 65% of our population is under the age of 40 and nearly 30% is under the age of 20. The Bid to host World Expo really is powered by youth,” she says.
