Tourist Spend in Azerbaijan Increases 21%

Tourism is flourishing in Azerbaijan. Growing numbers of international flights, a constantly improving rail network and increases in visitor accommodation options support the growth. Also, Azerbaijan’s reputation as a great destination has been enhanced thanks to the high profile international events it now regularly hosts.

The introduction of the ASAN Visa system has also played a part. Online, inexpensive visa applications are now fulfilled within three days and, for urgent applications, within three hours. With 5.2 million* international visitors expected to visit World Expo Baku 2025, it was vital that this system be implemented, simplifying the visitor experience.

Even before the World Expo Bid, tourist numbers and tourist spending has been growing rapidly. Between January and May some one million international visitors from 184 different countries spent more than $300 million US dollars in Azerbaijan, a spending increase of 21% on the same period the previous year. Russia, Georgia, Iran, Turkey and the UAE supply the largest tourist numbers, while visitor numbers from India, Saudi Arabia and Oman have seen large increases.

The 2017 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report published by The World Economic Forum, showed that Azerbaijan was the most improved country, achieving a global ranking of 71, up 13 places on the previous report from 2015.
